Camp Activities Sept. 2009

Camp Activities Update – Sept 2009

Unity Cemetery Project

The first batch of names from the UDC researcher has been passed to the camp and we will be filling out the VA forms on each one.

For the uninitiated, the US Government supplies headstones or footstones for all US veterans, even Confederates.

As with most government forms each one must be checked and rechecked and all supplemental information must be supplied to make a successful order. There will be close to 40 stones ordered when all is said and done.

School Supplies

We are collecting various school supplies for the local elementary school here and will donate them in the camp’s name.

The camp commander has been doing this for several years on his own and decided to let the camp get the credit this year.

We have a box about half full and will take it down as soon as we get some more items.

UPDATE: Box delivered to the school.

Book : Our resident Civil War history professor, Dr. Brandon Beck, has finished his latest book and is currently at the publisher for editing. The title is The Battle of Okolona, February 22nd 1864 –Defending the Mississippi Prairie. The book should be ready for release on the 2010 anniversary of the battle, and Brandon will be in Okolona for the release at the battlefield visitor center.

The UDC is also arranging a book signing in the S.D. Lee home in Columbus; buy the book and get a free tour of the home and museum.

Events Coming Up : Caledonia Days – 17 October.

The camp has put in the form requesting a booth for itself and one for the UDC.

Caledonia Christmas Parade – First Saturday in December
